Basement lowering, also known as underpinning or basement excavation, involves digging beneath a home to increase ceiling height or reinforce the foundation. This type of project is often undertaken to make a basement livable, improve the structural stability of a building, or add a new level to the property.

Step 1: Assessment and Planning
A member of our team will first assess your project to identify your specific needs. We will then determine the most appropriate method for carrying out the work and develop a detailed work plan.

Step 2: Concrete Floor Demolition
Our team will demolish the concrete floor and remove all debris and excavated materials to ensure a clean and professional worksite.
The foundation walls will be divided into three 4-foot sections (A, B and C).
To stabilize the structure throughout the work, our teams will work on one section at a time. Section A will be excavated first, followed by Section B and then Section C.

This type of structural work requires a building permit from your municipality, as well as an engineer’s plan.
Step 3: Excavation Beneath the Existing Walls
Our team will excavate the area beneath Section A to the required depth based on the planned wall height.
Step 4: Formwork and Concrete Pouring
Our team will install the formwork for the entire Section A and then pour the concrete. Once the concrete has cured, we will repeat Steps 3 and 4 for Sections B and C.
Step 5: Drainage and Waterproofing
Our team will install a French drain and a waterproofing membrane to help prevent moisture and water infiltration into your basement. Our experts will then backfill the area using stone.
Good to know
We use ¾-inch clear stone, DB-certified (pyrite-free).
Step 6: Plumbing Replacement (Optional)
If desired, a plumber can replace or upgrade the existing plumbing and/or install a piping system to create a heated concrete floor.
Step 7: Insulation and Installation of the New Floor
Our team will install extruded polystyrene or spray polyurethane foam insulation beneath the slab, along with a vapour barrier. We will also install a radon mitigation system. Finally, we will pour the new concrete slab, completing the underpinning work with Les Goudrons du Québec.

This type of structural work requires a building permit from your municipality.
